Earthly Father and Heavenly Father

Yesterday, a patriarch from a different stake came and visited our little branch. He was travelling around the area so decided to attend our sacrament meeting. It was a fast Sunday so he went up and shared his testimony. His testimony really stood out to me so I want to share it with you all!

When he first became a patriarch, he would sometimes doubt about his ability to give blessings and wonder if it’s ever his own words. Then one day he had the opportunity to give a patriarchal blessing to one of his sons. Before giving the blessing, he wrote down a list of blessings he wanted to give to his son. As his father, he had many wishes and hopes for him. He wanted to bless him in every way possible! But once he started performing the patriarchal blessing, he completely forgot everything on that list. His mind went blank. Afterwards, he typed it up nicely and he decided to compare the patriarchal blessing with the list of blessings he made previously! He realised that the blessings he wanted to give to his son were worldly and materialistic blessings, but the blessings listed in the patriarchal blessing were eternal blessings. He learnt then that the wishes and hopes of a earthly father may seem big, but the blessings that our Heavenly Father has in store for us are even bigger – bigger than we can comprehend right now.

His testimony was even more special to me because last week, I’d been studying my patriarchal blessing! I found an article called ‘understanding your Patriarchal Blessing’ in 2017 April Liahona, so read it along my patriarchal and tried to apply it to my own blessing. I started to realise all of blessings I’ve been blessed with already and all of the blessings that God has in plan for me! it was amazing to see how He really knows exactly what we need at this time. With every big decision I’ve had to make in my life so far, I’ve been able to find direction and confirmation from my patriarchal blessing. I am so grateful that we have a loving Heavenly Father who knows us by name and that we can feel His love and guidance through our patriarchal blessings!

3 Nephi 14:7-11

7 Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
8 For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, who, if his son ask bread, will give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
